Our Story
AgriSea was founded by New Zealanders Jill Bradley and Keith Atwood, who both grew up in post-war ‘growing’ families, with chickens and a supply of home-grown, real food providing nutrition over “canned” pantry goods.
Working as school teachers at the time that they met, their lack of monetary wealth led the couple to a life changing cheap holiday on which they discovered the wonders of seaweed.
The holiday was going WWOOFing – being a Willing Worker on Organic Farms in New Zealand. Jill and Keith put in their hours of work and got to meet and spend time with people who grew food the way it was supposed to taste and was supposed to look.
It had been a damp summer and everyone was struggling with fungal diseases in their crops, gluggy soils and problems from the rain.
However, they found a place owned by a German couple, where there was no fungal disease and the grass was greener – it was verdant. The major input to the soil and plants here was seaweed.
Moving forward to 1996, AgriSea was established to improve soil and crop health, promote environmental stewardship, and support the livelihoods of local dairy and livestock farmers and rural seaweed gatherers using seaweed technology and innovation.
AgriSea is now run by second-generation Clare and Tane Bradley, the son of late founder Jill Bradley.
AgriSea has become a seaweed pioneer, using science and innovation alongside its traditionally fermented and brewed certified organic and non-certified liquid seaweed concentrates for animal, pasture and soil health.
The methods developed by AgriSea throughout the decades allow it to scale positive environmental impact and climate-resilient land-based farming practices.
AgriSea’s product line is tailored to meet the diverse needs of land-based farmers and growers including dairy farmers, ranchers, viticulturists, apiarists, orchardists, home gardeners, and more. AgriSea seaweed bio stimulants promote beneficial microbes by stimulating the biology of the soil and are rich in micronutrients and compounds that can enhance soil fertility and plant growth and improve nutrient uptake.
Clare and Tane collaborate with academic institutions, agricultural experts, and farmers to conduct field trials and collect data. They focus on projects that merge indigenous New Zealand Māori knowledge and regenerative agriculture principles to improve soils and waterways.
AgriSea builds community through education programs for farmers and projects like Rere ki Uta Rere ki Tai, working alongside New Zealand farms scientifically and using indigenous and farmer knowledge to pilot biological methods that restore the mana (respect) and mauri (life force) of the soil.
Over the years, AgriSea New Zealand expanded its reach and developed a strong reputation both domestically and internationally. Greenwave US has teamed up with AgriSea’s established track record of bio stimulant production, to replicate proven AgriSea fermentation methods using sugar kelp, a species sustainably farmed from U.S. waters.
